Dictating Authoritative Letters with Ease

  This morning I walked
Down the front stairs, through the foyer
And outside,
With two boys –
One on my hip and One
Trailing thoughtfully behind.

It is more than likely
He was asking me a question
About why we cannot catch the moon,
Or perhaps pretending
To be a dinosaur or a grown man-
Discerning, analyzing
And dictating
Authoritative letters with ease.
I nod my head and smile
Thoughtlessly,
Preoccupied with the inconsequential nonsense
That commonly clouds my vision.

But when I am present,
I call them both, and You,
The Miracles that made me whole.
Your presence on the scene
A gasp of air after stretched submersion,
A lifelong cripple suddenly
Bounding all over Creation.

As if a painter,
Previously engrossed in grays,
Finally dragged his brush
With brilliant reds and deep blues
Across a canvas, unashamed.

Look! There it is!
A color more spectacular than the last;
A peculiar detail that’s strangely familiar;
And a world we might’ve known
Had it not been this one-
This wildly beautiful,
Upside down and clumsy,
Overflowing with joy
World.
